Hello all,
Before mentioning a few recent CDs and upcoming concerts of note, we’d like to toot the horn regarding our improved special order service. Here at Highlife, we now have access to a much wider range of hard to find imported CDs, vinyl and DVDs (both music and movies). In a few seconds, we could let you know whether an item is available and in stock at the supplier, in which case it would take less than 2 weeks to arrive (often less than a week). If you’ve been frustrated trying to track down a CD, LP or DVD, feel free to try us. By the way, there is no extra charge for this service.
RECENT CDs OF NOTE:
1) TOUMANI DIABATE - “THE MANDE VARIATIONS” - Mali’s kora virtuoso delivers a shimmering recording of solo instrumentals. Sublime!
2) DANIEL LANOIS - “HERE IS WHAT IS” - This brand new recording by one of Canada’s most talented artists is an impressive showcase of the guitarist, vocalist, producer’s multi-faceted talents, from his more melodic pieces to his trademark sonic excursions.
3) CHEB i SABBAH - “DEVOTION” - Returning his musical focus to India, Cheb i Sabbah offers this alluring set of subtly updated devotional music. Compelling and inspiring, this is perhaps his most satisfying release so far.
4) LEVON HELM - “DIRT FARMER” - A great return to his Appalachian roots from this surviving member of The Band. Acoustic guitars, mandolins, fiddles and dulcimers are front and center on this unadorned gem.
5) JUSTIN ADAMS & JULDEH CAMARA - “SOUL SCIENCE” - North meets South on this immensely exciting disc that brings together the British guitarist/producer Justin Adams (who has worked with Saharan dynamos Tinariwen) with the Gambian griot vocalist Juldeh Camara. This is music of great vitality and myriad pleasures.
6) THE DYNAMICS - “VERSION EXCURSION” - This France-based international reggae posse brings us one of the year’s most entertaining recordings. These soulful covers of Stones, Dylan, Led Zep, White Stripes and lesser known works inhabit their own Stax meets Studio One universe, at times sounding like Curtis Mayfield fronting a reggae band tackling the classic rock songbook.
7) “WHAT’S HAPPENING IN PERNAMBUCO“ - David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label adds to its impressive roster of collections documenting various facets of Brazilian music. This time focusing on recent recordings from Pernambuco in Brazil’s northeast, the music is at once familiar and strange, yet another surprising twist from this fertile musical land.
Also, coming soon is the much acclaimed new ORCHESTRA BAOBAB CD ”MADE IN DAKAR“. This follow-up to their great comeback CD ”Specialist in All Styles” will be well worth the wait.
There you have it, our hand-picked synopsis of a variety of interesting musical recordings. Make sure to check with Highlife first for tickets as you’ll find our service charges much more user-friendly than the alternatives.
Best wishes to all in our far-flung cyber-group,
The Highlife Crew
