With great recent recordings by Calexico, Michael Franti, Prince Fatty, Elliott Brood, Issa Bagayogo, Sigur Ros and many others, its been a tough call lately to pick an absolute favourite. However, the most recent effort by Thievery Corporation called ‘RADIO RETALIATION’ goes straight to the top of the heap and instantly finds itself in the running for Album of the Year. The disc plays like a Highlifer’s dream, drawing on elements of so many genres (the outernational style) and moulding them into a seamless powerhouse of sound that could only be produced by the Thievery duo of Eric Hilton and Rob Garza. Essential rebel music that rocks the house.

NPR World Cafe: recent

Folk-leaning songsmith, Joseph Arthur, joins host David Dye on this edition of World Cafe Words & Music from WXPN. Although Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, and Michael Stipe can be counted among his biggest fans, Arthur hasn't seized the mainstream audience that his acclaim warrants — and he's okay with that. Having released four EPs inside the first months of 2008, and topping it off with a new full-length album, called "Temporary People," Arthur clearly finds that his joy is simply in making records. In this interview, he discusses how the new album is a response to the last one, and tempts us with talk of creating an electronic album.

Coming up on World Cafe Words and Music from WXPN, David Dye gets a visit from Calexico. Drawing musical inspiration from the border region between California and Mexico, the aptly-named band has carved out a distinctive niche in the indie rock scene. In talking with David, they explain their travels to South America and John Fante's book, "Ask The Dust," which appear in the themes of their new record.
