With great recent recordings by Calexico, Michael Franti, Prince Fatty, Elliott Brood, Issa Bagayogo, Sigur Ros and many others, its been a tough call lately to pick an absolute favourite. However, the most recent effort by Thievery Corporation called ‘RADIO RETALIATION’ goes straight to the top of the heap and instantly finds itself in the running for Album of the Year. The disc plays like a Highlifer’s dream, drawing on elements of so many genres (the outernational style) and moulding them into a seamless powerhouse of sound that could only be produced by the Thievery duo of Eric Hilton and Rob Garza. Essential rebel music that rocks the house.

MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD - All Rebel Rockers - Recorded in Jamaica and produced by Sly & Robbie, Franti and crew pump up the volume on songs previewed at this year’s folk fest.

CALEXICO - Carried To Dust - Tucson based roots rockers deliver a sprawling new work that captures their many sounds, from Morricone drenched workouts to mariachi tinged pieces to guitar led roots rock. Stands with their best albums to date.

PRINCE FATTY - Survival Of The Fattest - The roots reggae revival keeps picking up steam, and this Prince Fatty release is one of the best of this recent batch of winners. This UK based posse offers great grooves with lots of horns as they’re joined by some Jamaican legends. Instant classic!

ELLIOTT BROOD - Mountain Meadows - This second CD by the roots-folk-country rock Toronto based group is one contagious rollicking affair. Banjo, guitars, drums and vocal harmonies bring lots of energy and some great songs to this wonderful recording.

BUIKA - Nina De Fuego - This smoky-voiced Spanish vocalist from Majorca is back with a sublime new recording of her jazz-meets-flamenco music. Once again produced by Javier Limon, producer of the superb groundbreaking ‘Lagrimas Negras’ by Bebo & Cigala, the music (acoustic guitar, bass, trumpet, piano and hand claps) perfectly complements her rich vocals.

ISSA BAGAYOGO - Mali Koura - The innovative Malian vocalist and n’goni player is back, this time adding jazzy horns and piano to give new twists to his blending of Malian roots and western electronica.

COMING SEPTEMBER 23:

THIEVERY CORPORATION - Radio Retaliation - Much anticipated new release features Seu Jorge, Femi Kuti and Anoushka Shankar, among others.

1) NIYAZ - ‘NINE HEAVENS’ - The second release from this superb Persian electronica group offers 2 discs of acoustic and electronic versions of Persian, Indian and Turkish sufi songs. Mesmerisingly beautiful!

2) SEUN KUTI & FELA’S EGYPT 80 - Son of the late, great Fela Kuti, who created ‘afrobeat’ music in the 60’s and 70’s, hooks up with his dad’s amazing band as he channels his father’s musical and political incitefulness. As his recent impressive Commodore show demonstrated, Seun is keeping a great tradition alive as he leads the premier afrobeat outfit in convincing fashion.

3) AL GREEN - ‘LAY IT DOWN’ - One of the great soul voices, who’s early 70’s classics will live on forever, recaptures much of the magic on his latest offering. Co-produced by ?uestlove of The Roots and utilizing the superb Dap Kings horn section, this is further proof that the soul revival is not slowing down.

4) RUPA & THE APRIL FISHES - ‘EXTRAORDINARY RENDITION’ - Echoing Lhasa’s multicultural musical approach, Rupa sings in French, Spanish, Hindi and English as her band brings together chanson, balkan, tango and Indian musical strains on their highly satisfying debut. Another home run from the label that brought us Ska Cubano and Andy Palacio.

5) EMMYLOU HARRIS - ‘ALL i INTENDED TO BE’ - On her latest recording, the Americana icon teams up with long-time friends such as Dolly Parton and the McGarrigles (who co-wrote 2 of the best songs) and re-connects with the producer of her early classic albums, Brian Ahern. The folk, country and bluegrass strands are seamlessly woven on these covers and originals that are a showcase for Harris’ strengths.

6) SIGUR ROS - ‘MED SUD I EYRUM VID SPILUM ENDALAUST’ - The epic, ethereal, psychedelic Icelandic folk music phenomenon, whose concerts and recordings and amazing DVD have justifiably thrilled many these last few years, are back with a lovely brand new album. Written, recorded and released this year, this manages to update their sound while retaining some of their trademark qualities.

7) THE LIONS - ‘JUNGLE STRUTTIN’ - This San Francisco based collective has produced a wide ranging album featuring dynamic horns and plenty of Jamaica-inspired grooves. If you’ve been enjoying ‘10 Foot Ganja Plant’ and ‘The Dynamics’ this great album should be next on your list.

Here’s a list of our favourite recordings to appear so far this year.

THE DYNAMICS Version Excursions France

This Paris based international soul-reggae posse offers one of the year’s most satisfying albums. At times sounding like Curtis Mayfield fronting a reggae band tackling the classic rock songbook, they take reggae’s long tradition of cover tunes to a new level.

ORCHESTRA BAOBAB Made In Dakar Senegal

This triumphant recording by one of our favourite African groups is inspired by one of the world’s great musical cities, Dakar. Updating traditional griot songs as well as hits from the 60’s and 70’s with their trademark Afro-Cuban sound, Orchestra Baobab play with the effortless grace and joyfulness of long-time musical collaborators, making deeply soulful music, Dakar style.

NICK CAVE Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! Australia

The prodigious wordsmith, who recently turned 50, is back with his hardest-rocking release in years. A revitalized Bad Seeds band complement the darkly humourous lyrics and theatrical delivery with their edgy rhythms, as Cave and his cohorts seem to be having a whale of a time.

UMALALI Garifuna Women’s Project Belize

This beautiful recording focuses on the rich musical culture of the Afro-Caribbean people of Central America. Producer Ivan Duran, who also produced the remarkable ‘Watina’ by the late, great Andy Palacio, brings together some fabulous female voices from Belize, who bring these spirited songs to life while keeping their culture alive.

JUSTIN ADAMS & JULDEH CAMARA Soul Science UK/Gambia

North meets South on this exciting disc which brings together British guitarist/producer Justin Adams (who has worked with Saharan dynamos Tinariwen as well as Robert Plant) and the Gambian griot/vocalist Juldeh Camara. Camara’s scorching one-string fiddle leads the way, accompanied by a crack rhythm section and his own impassioned vocals. A rousing Saharan blues workout.

BUIKA Mi Nina Lola Spain

This achingly beautiful recording by the wonderfully smoky vocalist from Majorca (who grew up alongside a gypsy community) adds jazz and soul to its flamenco roots. With a stellar band and crisp production, this will appeal to fans of Bebo & Cigala.

CAT POWER Jukebox USA

Chan Marshall’s follow-up to her wonderful ‘The Greatest’ album is this remarkable recording of (mostly) covers. Her interpretations of songs by artists from Dylan to James Brown to Joni Mitchell and others never fail to intrigue and entertain. Her tribute to Dylan, ‘Song to Bobby’ (echoing Dylan’s ‘Song to Woody’) is particularly striking.

CHEB I SABBAH Devotion India/USA

Returning his musical focus to India, Cheb i Sabbah offers this alluring set of subtly updated devotional music. The pulsing rhythms underlying the sitar and tabla interplay and the evocative vocals add up to inspiring music, arguably his most satisfying to date.

DEVOTCHKA A Mad & Faithful Telling USA

Indie bands from Vampire Weekend to Gogol Bordello are adding a world of international melodies and rhythms to their music, and Devotchka seem to be inspired by two of our favourite groups, Calexico and Beirut. Combining accordion, trumpets, violin, bouzouki and sousaphone, they evoke Ennio Morricone conducting a mariachi band in the Balkans. Unique flavours abound.

TOUMANI DIABATE The Mande Variations Mali

Mali’s leading kora virtuoso delivers his second solo instrumental recording 20 years after the first. A true innovator, Diabate, who has collaborated with Taj Mahal, Bjork, Ali Farka Toure, the flamenco group Ketama and countless others, brings his amazing technique and musical adventurousness to this set of new ancient tunes, as Nick Gold’s sterling production lets the music shine.

DANIEL LANOIS Here Is What Is Canada

The latest release by one of Canada’s most talented artists is a showcase for the guitarist/vocalist/producer’s many strengths. From dreamy, atmospheric soundscapes featuring his wonderful pedal steel playing to more straight ahead songs, this is a multi-faceted work from a multi-faceted artist. Also available is a fascinating companion DVD documentary portrait of Lanois and his musical journey.

WYCKHAM PORTEOUS 3 A.M. Canada

East Vancouver’s Wyckham Porteous has been writing and singing great songs for over 20 years. With his distinctive big voice and heartfelt delivery, Wyckham presents a highly listenable set of originals and covers. His version of the Beatles ‘Please Please Me’ is a particularly inspired highlight.

RADIOHEAD In Rainbows UK

This latest Radiohead recording, which garnered remarkable press for its unique approach to on-line marketing, also happens to be a great set of songs. Known for their ability to find beauty in darkness, Thom Yorke and his bandmates alternate melody and abstraction to startling effect on their most compelling release since ‘OK Computer.’

ROUGH GUIDE TO AFRICAN STREET PARTY Africa/Various

This excellent Rough Guide is a rollicking ride through the heat-drenched streets of Africa, where music blares from every shop front, market stall and passing vehicle. With a focus on the contemporary edge of African sounds, this trip takes you from Mali in the northwest through Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, Angola, Congo and Mozambique. A wonderful journey awaits.

SIGUR ROS Heima (DVD) & Hvarf/Heim (CD) Iceland

The simultaneous release of a double DVD and double CD by one of Iceland’s natural wonders is cause for celebration. The beautifully shot DVD set follows Sigur Ros around Iceland on their tour of free concerts, giving insight into the group and their remarkable country. The double CD includes new electric recordings and acoustic live pieces, both highlighting their uniquely compelling blend of Icelandic folk, classical and psychadelia.

JEF STOTT Saracen USA

In the genre of worldly-electro-dub, the Six Degrees label from San Francisco has very few rivals. Riding on the heals of last year’s brilliant Gaudi meets Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan remix album comes this wonderfully exotic recording by newcomer Jef Stott. On this album, traditional sounds and voices of North Africa and the Middle East fuse effortlessly with dubby grooves and energetic dance beats to produce a compelling musical journey.

UP BUSTLE & OUT Istanbul’s Secrets UK/Turkey

The pair of globetrotting Brits known as Up Bustle & Out, who have previously made rewarding musical pilgrimages to Bolivia, Cuba and Mexico, now immerse themselves in Turkey’s vibrant musical culture. Adding touches of flamenco, dub and electronica, they’ve produced a double CD of great range and abundant beauty.

LOVE & JUSTICE” - On his first release in 6 years, Billy Bragg incorporates the various facets of his musical vocabulary, from the roots sounds of his Wilco collaborations to the music hall stylings of earlier days. His trademark themes ranging from social justice to more domestic topics are here, along with his sharp wit. All in all, a welcome return by this gifted artist.

3) OJOS DE BRUJO - “TECHARI LIVE” - CD/DVD - Spain’s leading cutting edge roots posse presents an impressive live recording, augmenting their flamenco sounds with a remarkable variety of Spanish,Cuban and Indian guests, as their sound morphs from flamenco to salsa to reggae to bhangra. Also included is a DVD that features a live concert as well as an informative documentary.

Thanks to all of you who filled up the cozy confines of Highlife Records on Monday night. Federico Aubele was in fine form, playing acoustic guitar and singing several of his most memorable songs. He is in town to do an opening set for Morcheeba at the Commodore and very kindly came by to share his music in the intimacy of the store setting. Thanks also to Melanie Copple (label rep extraordinaire) of Distribution Select, for helping to make it happen. We look forward to doing many more in-store performances this year. Will keep you posted.

Hello all,

Before mentioning a few recent CDs and upcoming concerts of note, we’d like to toot the horn regarding our improved special order service. Here at Highlife, we now have access to a much wider range of hard to find imported CDs, vinyl and DVDs (both music and movies). In a few seconds, we could let you know whether an item is available and in stock at the supplier, in which case it would take less than 2 weeks to arrive (often less than a week). If you’ve been frustrated trying to track down a CD, LP or DVD, feel free to try us. By the way, there is no extra charge for this service.

RECENT CDs OF NOTE:

1) TOUMANI DIABATE - “THE MANDE VARIATIONS” - Mali’s kora virtuoso delivers a shimmering recording of solo instrumentals. Sublime!

2) DANIEL LANOIS - “HERE IS WHAT IS” - This brand new recording by one of Canada’s most talented artists is an impressive showcase of the guitarist, vocalist, producer’s multi-faceted talents, from his more melodic pieces to his trademark sonic excursions.

3) CHEB i SABBAH - “DEVOTION” - Returning his musical focus to India, Cheb i Sabbah offers this alluring set of subtly updated devotional music. Compelling and inspiring, this is perhaps his most satisfying release so far.

4) LEVON HELM - “DIRT FARMER” - A great return to his Appalachian roots from this surviving member of The Band. Acoustic guitars, mandolins, fiddles and dulcimers are front and center on this unadorned gem.

5) JUSTIN ADAMS & JULDEH CAMARA - “SOUL SCIENCE” - North meets South on this immensely exciting disc that brings together the British guitarist/producer Justin Adams (who has worked with Saharan dynamos Tinariwen) with the Gambian griot vocalist Juldeh Camara. This is music of great vitality and myriad pleasures.

6) THE DYNAMICS - “VERSION EXCURSION” - This France-based international reggae posse brings us one of the year’s most entertaining recordings. These soulful covers of Stones, Dylan, Led Zep, White Stripes and lesser known works inhabit their own Stax meets Studio One universe, at times sounding like Curtis Mayfield fronting a reggae band tackling the classic rock songbook.

7) “WHAT’S HAPPENING IN PERNAMBUCO“ - David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label adds to its impressive roster of collections documenting various facets of Brazilian music. This time focusing on recent recordings from Pernambuco in Brazil’s northeast, the music is at once familiar and strange, yet another surprising twist from this fertile musical land.

Also, coming soon is the much acclaimed new ORCHESTRA BAOBAB CD ”MADE IN DAKAR“. This follow-up to their great comeback CD ”Specialist in All Styles” will be well worth the wait.

There you have it, our hand-picked synopsis of a variety of interesting musical recordings. Make sure to check with Highlife first for tickets as you’ll find our service charges much more user-friendly than the alternatives.

Best wishes to all in our far-flung cyber-group,
